Cornwall (May 2023)

To Boscastle and beyond…

Today was somewhat of a slow and misty start! After reacquainting ourselves with the intricacies of vanlife, sharing a 5.4 metre van with a 35kg dog and a messy Michael we learnt a lot in a short space of time!

E.g. it is warmer to sleep with the pop top up, but the internal bed down as it keeps the heat in and we have to get up and put the bed away pretty much straight away to give ourselves maximum space.

Everyone will be shocked to hear that it was I who was first out of bed this morning and taking the dog for his early morning wee – even Bentley was unsure of what was going on! We packed up the van, made some takeaway coffees and hit the road jack. Destination: Boscastle.

Boscastle

A 2 and a bit hour drive, some 118 miles and single track (squeaky bum time) roads we made it to Boscastle.

It was misty and overcast so we layered up, only to be stripping off some 5 minutes later as it was so warm! We were climbing up the trail, looking out to the sea expecting our heads to be blow off by the wind and nothing! The weather may have been somewhat dull, but the view and experience was anything but!

We picked up a pasty (it would have been rude not to!) and headed back to the van to eat them in peace. Cue Bentley trying to get an extra snack!

St Nectan’s Waterfall

Despite the last few miles being a bit dubious road wise, it was relatively easy to park – there were some designated motor home parking spaces and other larger spaces that we were able to squeeze into – the price of parking wasn’t too much either.

We then headed on a 7 minute trek to the parking spot for St Nectan’s Waterfall. Again, some of the roads could have been triple the width that they were, but we found parking really simple.

The waterfall was about a mile from the car park, a lovely hike through some bluebell woods, following the stream towards the main event. It was a wet, muddy and a very slippery walk but the waterfall was stunning (albeit a little pricey!).

We enjoyed seeing the falls from various viewing platforms before heading back up for some well deserved ice cream, pup included.

An evening in Tintagel

We then made the descent back down to the car for the final drive of the day – another 7 minute stint to Tintagel and King Arthur’s Car Park where we can park for the night for £10, absolute bargain!

After a short interlude (I blame the dog for falling asleep on me!) we went to explore the streets of Tintagel in search of a well deserved pint!

An extra pint more than we first anticipated – because we deserved it! We headed to the fish and chip shop before heading back to the van to eat dinner before settling in to watch some tv on our new projector!

Total miles today: 119, total miles for the trip 301! We’ve walked about 12.5km today so an early night is calling! Tomorrow we take on King Arthur!
