King Arthur and his Castle

This morning was back to normal, it was misty and overcast, it had rained overnight and I was not the first person up and out of bed! It was, what can only be described as a leisurely start to the day today, which was very needed after the adventures of yesterday!

Tintagel Castle

The plan for the day was to explore Tintagel castle, Merlins Cave and everything the landscape had to offer. Not to give anything away but it was stunning! First things first though – coffee!

It was a short walk to the ticket office, £20 each seemed quite pricey, but they clearly have to work hard year round to try and maintain the site and the paths from the weather and the ever changing landscape. It was then a short, but hilly walk to the entrance.

The ruins were stunning, the landscape was stunning, the weather was overcast but weirdly warm as again there was no breeze, we were stripping our layers off yet again as it was so deceiving my warm.

I think the word of the day emerging already is stunning, and I think the pictures prove why.

It was a dramatic cliff top view after view and you could see for miles. The inclines and slippery slate steps were very much worth the views we were treated to time and time again. Once we were at the top, we waved at King Arthur and then took the slow approach back down.

Going all the way up meant going all the way back down again! Slow and steady was the only approach to this. The one-way system meant that even on the way down you got breathtaking views.

Merlin’s Cave

We headed all the way down to the beach to check out Merlins Cave, the tide was out which meant we could go in and explore.

Barras Nose and back to Tintagel

After frolicking around on the beach for a while, we exited the castle grounds and carried on our walk, following the National Trust path to Barras Nose. This gave us the chance to turn around and see where we had just been exploring. We didn’t quite realise just how high up we had been! We had crossed that bridge!

We followed the coastal path round and back into Tintagel where we picked up another pasty for our lunch, took it back to the van and sat outside relaxing for a while.

A slow Sunday afternoon

We did some vanlife chores: showered off the dog and made him look and smell good again, then treated ourselves to a flannel shower (actual shower tomorrow at a new campsite!), cleaned the mats and wiped the floor after tidying it all up a bit and then carried on relaxing outside.

The mist then seemed to come out of nowhere forcing us inside for a while to play cards and let the dog relax.

We continued with a relaxing Sunday afternoon into evening, cooked our dinner, watched another episode on the projector and had an early night.

Tintagel has been beautiful and it’s well worth stopping here for a night or 2! The car park we stayed in was £10 for each 24 hour period and we felt very safe as there were a number of other vans, conversions and Motorhomes – here sleeping in a car park feels normal!
